2018_01_04 MARISSA WHALE WATCH AND ON TO GALLE

Connie and I and the Steingart’s got up early (6:00 departure) to go whale watching from the Marissa pier.  Maddu and Caru took us in the bus to near the pier where we then got into tuk tuks for the final few blocks.

Richie, Bobi and Connie waiting by the ticket office.

Sunrise in the harbor.

Fisherman just outside the harbor.

Spinner dolphin.  There were a bunch of them.

Pair of Orcas.  Because they were around no Blue Whales.

Lots of boats chasing after the Orcas when they would come up to breathe.

Back in the harbor.

Pretty charotic with a lot of boats ready to head out.  We went quite a way off shore - all the way to the tanker ship’s shipping lane.  I would guess 3 miles?

Along the way we encountered Spinner Dolphins and they frolicked at the side of our boat for quite a while. We left them grudgingly to try and find whales.

We did see a pair of Orcas - a rare sight accorfing to the guides.   When Orcas are around the other whales seem to know it and stay away.  So no Blue whales.....

We stayed out about three hours and returned to our hotel.  We than went to another hotel at Marissa Beach where we swam for an hour or so before lunch at Ambrosia Roti Restaurant, a place Rich had heard about on Trip Advisor.  Fantastic lunch prepared by a very nice group of people.  They invited us to see how they cooked in the kitchen and then prepared a great meal for us all.

We walked over to The Ambrosia Roti Restaurant for lunch.

Lunch was in here. Our bus is parked in the back.

Maddu and Karu with Rich on his phone.

Chopping roti up for Kottu.

Chefs preparing meals.  Their power was out so they had to be creative.

Inside the kitchen.

A plate of kottu shaped like a heart for Larainne.

I had a fresh coconut shaped like a mouse.  Delicious coconut water....

I scraped out the coconut flesh Sri Lankan style with the "mouse ear".

After lunch we piled into the bus and headed to Galle.

We are staying at the Fort Bazaar Hotel right inside the old walled town of Galle.  We had arrived just in time to take a walk on the fort walls and watch a beautiful sunset.

Soccer game along the Fort walls.  Muslim lady hiding her face from my photo.

Sunset along the wall heading towards Flag Rock.

Old lighthouse.

Tomorrow we will be heading to Columbo and our last night in Sri Lanka.  We are sad to be near the end but have great memories of a fabulous vacation.
